Thomas Nozkowski is regarded as one of the most important exponents of the current American art scene. His mostly small format paintings and drawings develop an own language of landscape, trails and abstract, sometimes biographical notations which are created through subtle combination, overlap, interaction and relations of various colours. It is a form of painting beyond mainstream, rather muted but still exquisitely emphatic. It is no coincidence that his work is often associated with the work of Paul Klee or Joan Miró, although the inner syntax of Nozkowski is a different one. However, also Nozkowski himself considers the small format as being adequate for the radical and at the same time poetic force of his pictures. Their language is that rich that they contrive to visualise the complexity of human conception, imagination and wishes in an unusual way.
Nozkowski’s works are represented in various American collections and highlight the astonishing presence of an Oeuvre, which, at its heart, eludes all fashionable “-isms”: Thomas Nozkowski will be represented at the Venice Biennale in 2007. This exhibition is deliberately organised in the close temporal context of the Biennale, Art Basel and Documenta Kassel. It is developed in collaboration with the artist as well as the Max Protetch Gallery and the Pace Wildenstein Gallery, New York.
