Quite spectacularly, Jörg Immendorff is a successful artist who breaks all conventions, and who, in contrast to many of his colleagues, takes a stand both on politics and society. After professorships at Konsthoegskolan in Stockholm and Städelschule in Frankfurt, the former secondary modern school teacher started giving lectures at the famous Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf in 1996. Joseph Beuys, his taskmaster and personal mentor, also gave lectures at the latter.

Little is known about what happens behind the walls of academies, how art is imparted to the young generation. With his master class it is sketchily presented how choice, methodical lecturing and standards of performance were being practised and realised in a consistent dialogue with the late master.
The preliminary work status is documented with up to three exhibits for each master student in order to emphasise the individual, markedly different positions. In addition to that, filmic recordings of the discussions at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf are arranged in such a way as to present the work climate at the academy: Thus, it becomes apparent how important it was to Immendorff to exchange art with and impart it to the younger generation.
This exhibition is going to be exciting in two respects: with regard to the taskmaster Jörg Immendorff and with regard to his students. The project was developed in co-operation with Professor Immendorff and the publishing company Geuer & Breckner GmbH, Düsseldorf. A portfolio with the art designs will be published, as well as a catalogue at the price of approx. 25 Euro (132 pages, of which 84 will be coloured, with a comment by Beate Reifenscheid, manager of the Ludwig Museum, and a quotation of Jörg Immendorff).
