BETTINA VAN HAAREN – PARTICLES AND MEMBRANES
CONY THEIS – SEE ME
June 22 – July 27, 2008

Bettina van Haaren, "Jagdbild" Eitempera/Öl auf Leinwand
110 x 80 cm, 2006

Bettina van Haaren (born in 1961) has been working as a professor at Dortmund University since 2000. She teaches drawing and graphic printing. First and foremost, van Haaren is known for her unique way of dealing with self-reflection and “self-touching”, a form of self-exploration that is again and again concerned with the outer texture of the skin as being a material which can be sensually experienced. In Trompe-l’śil manner, outside and inside are at the same time expressed and negated in the pictures.

Cony Theis, „Bright Secret“, verschiedene Techniken
44 x 66 cm, 2007

The artist Cony Theis (born in 1958) earned money on the side as a court illustrator for a long time. This experience also influenced the creative process of her art. Therefore, her works concentrate on biographies, her existence at present, or on those parts of the body on which she paints or where tattoos illustrate moments of identity. Consequently, many of her works are of a smaller format. They mostly get animated by the interactive effect of drawing, water colour painting and thin paper, an effect which is intentionally produced to create transparency and fluted paper. Many of Theis’ works develop an installation-like, room filling character.

In appreciation of both artists’ works two solo exhibitions are presented, in which interrelations of the methods and styles as well as interferences (unintentional but still obvious) can be experienced. An exhibition catalogue is published about each artist.
