PAUL SCHWER - ORION at Deutsches Eck
29 March – 3 May 2009

Schwer - Orion am Deutschen Eck.

Paul Schwer was born in 1951 and first practiced medicine before he started studying arts with Erwin Heerich at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the 1980s. Since then he is consequently pursuing his own concept of painting, which deals with colour, space, light and motion. Transparent materials like cloth, polyester film, panes of glass and Plexiglas, which Paul Schwer provides gesturally with pigment and screen printing ink, consistently lead to new perceptions when combined with neon light and spot light.

For the Ludwig Museum Paul Schwer designed a walk-in installation, wherein the visitor will have to find his way up the staircase to the centre. Through a seemingly unsystematic ensemble of fluorescent tubes, in which pieces of furniture are floating, the visitor is “beamed” into the Bel-Étage. Here, Paul Schwer’s characteristically curved panes of Plexiglas, called Baozis (name of Chinese dumplings), alternate with hemispheres reminding of igloos in the same way as his rectangular, hovering and luminescent objects covered with digital printings à la "Xing Zhuang 2" alternate with mural painting.

Paul Schwer's picture, which at the beginning is also still two-dimensional, moves into the room, it loosens from wall, ceiling and floor. The pictorial design virtually becomes a baroque “horror vacui“. In a „planetary“ arrangement of Paul Schwer’s works, laid-out like microcapsules – similar to the constellation Orion – the room is filled with colour and light in a holistic manner.

With a huge installation of colour and light the exhibition continues outside the Ludwig Museum. Especially for Koblenz, right at the ancient wall of the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) Paul Schwer will construct one of his “Bautafel-Paintings” (4 x 6 m), which will be visible far along the Rhine riverbank: Orion am Deutschen Eck (Orion at Deutsches Eck).

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue "Paul Schwer – Orion, Installation, Plastik, Malerei" with contributions by Martin Engler, Stephan Berg, Isabelle Malz, Beate Reifenscheid, Barbara Strieder. Kerber Verlag, Bielefeld 2008 (128 Pages, 20,00 Euro)
