For many years, HD Schrader has counted among the rare representatives of concrete, constructivist art who have enjoyed real recognition. This is made clear by his presence at the heart of international collections, his participation in numerous exhibitions, and his commissions for public space.
Since 1974, the artist has applied an immense range of techniques to treat the subject of the cube, exploring its possibilities and pictorial limits. The conceptual departure point for his sculptures is the idea of a cube created in the manner of an assembly.
The graphic and plastic layout of this "cubic space" is divided into innumerable triangles, squares, and rectangles; it highlights these two- and three-dimensional shapes while eliminating the traditional boundaries between the genres of sculpture, painting, and engraving.
Numerous works by HD Schrader not only seek proximity with nature, but also integrate themselves therein in the most obvious way. By alternating installation sites, his project "Cubes and Trees" proves this in a striking manner. Animal noises and nature sounds, such as bats, nightingales, or rustling tree branches, work themselves into the strict geometric order of his sculptural objects. The contrast between the straight-sided forms and the sounds that remain outside always results in exciting constellations. The most recent project deals with "Woodwatchers", guards' huts that seem hermetically sealed and take on the qualities of a secret observer.
This exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Today Art Museum in Beijing, China, which will simultaneously present a large installation and videos of the artist. At the time of this exhibition, a catalog will be published (German/English/Chinese).
