Formula One Up Close!
The Photographer Jirí Krenek
July 9 - August 23, 2009

Mika Häkkinen, McLaren Mercedes, Melbourne, 2000

With the young Czech photographer Jirí Krenek (born in 1974 in Prague) the Ludwig Museum Koblenz presents a range of sports photographies which have been shown very rarely in museums so far. The world of sports and commerce moves into the zones of art only occasionally anyway. In this case, however, the exception is well worth it.

Since 1992 Jirí Krenek has been working as photographer for the following motorsports magazines in Prague published by Springer: Svet Motoru, Autotip, Autoexclusive, F-1 Racing, Autoprofi. For years he has accompanied the people around Michael Schumacher & Co. as a sports photographer. In 2004 he was awarded the motorsports ‘Shot of the Year 2003’ in Paris!

With good reason, in our opinion. Most of all, his exceptional perspectives on the subject “racing car” and on the situation of the racing drivers are convincing. They visualise the speed, the elegant aesthetics of the aerodynamic cars, the excitement of the masses along the race course as well as the unique situations between the stars and the spectators. Even in front of the TV it is impossible to experience Formula One like this. The photographs of Jirí Krenek combine many things: timeliness, beauty and proximity.

The exhibition opens on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 5 p.m. in the Ludwig Museum. Thus, it is deliberately set in temporal context to the only Formula One race in Germany - which takes place at the nearby Nürburg-Ring. During the entire holiday season the photographs will be exhibited in the Ludwig Museum. Therefore, it can be experienced by fans of racing and of art, also after the Formula One event.

The Zender Company from Mülheim-Kärlich is going to provide a Ferrari for the exhibition opening which will be presented outdoors of the Ludwig Museum.
