Janosch’s phantastic universe
Traumstunden for Tiger Duck... Schnuddel, Quasselkasper, Mogelzahn!

Since the 60s Tiger and Bear, a little green frog called Günter Kastenfrosch and the Tiger Duck are part of every child’s bedroom decoration around the world. The inventor of these characters is called Horst Eckert, also known as Janosch. Eckert was born in Zabrze, Upper Silesia in 1931. Since 1980 the German illustrator, children’s book author and writer lives in Tenerife. To date he has written about 300 books which have been translated into 40 languages. This makes him one of the most famous German illustrators. He has been awarded with the Deutsche Kinderbuchpreis (German prize for children’s books), the Prix Jeunesse, the Gold Medal of Bratislava as well as the Federal Cross of Merit.

Alongside his works for the “kid’s world“, there are other sides to Janosch’s stories not known to everyone: in some of his novels and illustrations memories that go back to his childhood can be detected – a childhood that does not necessarily resemble a typical picture-book. “Von dem Glück, Hrdlak gekannt zu haben“ (Of the luck to have known Hrdlak) and ”Polski Blues“ deal, among other things, with his settlement of the score with the Catholic Church. In 1992 he was awarded with the Andreas-Gryphius-Prize for his novel “Polski Blues”.

The exhibition will show approx. 250 works: paintings, watercolours, pencil and ink drawings as well as etchings. Works will range from his early rather naïve oil paintings of the 70s up to his distinctive paper works and postcard drafts. The exhibition’s main focus will be on Janosch’s famous characters, needless to say the Tiger Duck up front. A room, dedicated to the Janosch-world, will be equipped with a wide variety of Janosch-furnishings, ranging from a wardrobe and a Tiger Duck swing to a wing chair as well as a Janosch-carpet.

The exhibition addresses children and teenagers as well as adults. A pedagogical program has been arranged, which kindergartens and school classes can attend – registrations can be made at the Ludwig Museum. Amongst others children will be able to create “mobiles” using Janosch figures or design their personal Tiger Duck sunglasses. Furthermore there will be other entertaining Janosch-adventures during the duration of the exhibition, such as readings, theatre performances, puppet and music theatres, yuletide baking as well as a circus for children, organised by the Jugendkunstwerkstatt (juvenile art workshop), to name a few.

An art-shop will be arranged exclusively for the exhibition, offering presents for the entire family.
